Bastard Teak

5 Apr

For day 5 of Napowrimo. Inspired by Mukul Chand’s excellent Flame of the Forest post.

In the forest of all trees, it stands apart
Blossom scarlet as a bleeding heart
Stuff of scripture
Pretty as a picture
Testament to nature’s art

But nature also has jealousies
Just as in humans, they’re also in trees
So those prized highly
Are viewed more slyly
And subject to indignities

So the flame of the forest of which I speak
Is called by trees ‘The bastard teak’
This envious spiking
Is not to its lichen (sorry!)
Making this beauty so meek

Man, that pun! You should not be sorry at all. It’s genius.
